9/3/2007: European Heritage Days – Cultural Heritage Days in Hungary(Published by Catherine Daraspe)
The European Heritage Days (EHDs) originate from the Monuments Open Doors launched in France in 1984. It was the following year when during the Second Conference of European Ministers responsible for Architectural Heritage of the Council of Europe the French Minister of Culture suggested extending the programme to European level. In 1991 the Council of Europe officially launched the European Heritage Days with the support of the European Commission; in 1999 it became a joint action of the two organisations.

The aims of the Heritage Days are to raise citizens’ awareness of Europe’s and the own country’s diversity and richness and to inform the public and the political authorities of the need to protect cultural heritage against new threats.

Every year in around 50 countries by now not only from Europe people set off and visit their surrounding historical sites, museums, buildings, parks, cemeteries, etc.
This year for Hungary is extraordinary, we got more applications than ever: 650 churches, castles, palaces, archaeological sites, cultural centres, parks await visitors who can also take part in about 200 guided walks around the cities and villages.

If Hungarians feel like they are welcome to cross the borders to see the neighbouring countries’ (Austria, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Serbia) historic sites.

Every year the Cultural Heritage Days have a theme, this year it is Progress and Patria – the Art of Classicism and the Age of Reform Movement. Next year will be the year of Renaissance in Hungary – we plan to adopt this theme also for the Cultural Heritage Days of 2008.
