| 6/6/2008: Design Special: BIO - Biennial of Industrial Design in Ljubljana (Slovenia) | (Published by Margrit Müller) | BIO, the Biennial of Industrial Design, has been taking place in Ljubljana since 1964 and is organized by the Architecture Museum of Ljubljana. Every two years, it presents products and prototypes from the fields of industrial design, visual communication and design concepts from Slovenia and abroad.
At the time when BIO was founded, its main function was to enable local design studios (Iskra, Gorenje, Stol, etc.) to get familiar with the design achievements of other countries which at the time of Socialist Yugoslavia were not to be seen in the shops. However, BIO also demonstrated the capacity of the Yugoslavian design industry economy at that time.
Today BIO showcases the most prominent trends of world design and has become an important professional connecting platform for Central European design and economy. While BIO is a predominantly European event, it also features selections from non-European countries such as Japan, China and Taiwan.
In 2008, the BIO 21 Secretariat received 421 entries from 29 countries - more than ever before. The focus of BIO 21 will be on design projects that are not just innovative, functional and of high quality but also concerned with social awareness and sustainable development. 126 works were selected for the exhibition.
Date: 2 October–2 November 2008
Venue: Architecture Museum of Ljubljana, Fužine Castle
More information (in English and Slovenian) is available from the BIO Website.
